How to give subcutaneous injections
Every nurse must know how to give subcutaneous injections and be able to perform this manipulation correctly.
After changing into a treatment room uniform, the nurse washes her hands with antibacterial soap and disinfects them with an antiseptic. Puts on sterile gloves and prepares equipment for subcutaneous injection.
- We use a syringe with a volume of 2 or 1 ml, the needle should be 2-3 cm long.
- We put sterile cotton balls or napkins on a sterile tray.
- To treat the patient's skin, 70% alcohol is needed.
- We prepare a special tray for waste material.
- In the treatment room there should be containers with disinfectants for tools and waste material.
Areas of the body for subcutaneous injections:
- outer surface of the shoulder, middle third;
- thigh, anterolateral surface;
- abdominal wall, lateral surface;
- subscapular region with pronounced subcutaneous fat.
Before making subcutaneous injections, the site of the proposed injection of the drug should be examined. The skin should not have damage and signs of dermatological diseases. In the presence of edema, you need to choose another place for injection.
How to directly give subcutaneous injections
- We draw the medicine into the syringe in accordance with all the rules in compliance with the anti-epidemic regime, we release air from the syringe, holding it vertically with the needle up.
- Wet 3 cotton balls with alcohol.
- Consistently we treat with "alcohol" balls first a large surface of the surgical field, then - the place of the upcoming injection.
- We drop the balls into a special tray for waste material.
- We place the syringe in the right hand so that the index finger is on the cannula, the little finger is on the piston, and the remaining fingers are on the cylinder.
- With the thumb and forefinger of the left hand, we capture the patient's skin in a fold.
- At the base of the resulting fold at an angle of 40-45 degrees, we introduce a needle (cut up) to 2/3 of its length. In this case, the index finger of the right hand remains on the cannula.
- We move the left hand to the syringe plunger and slowly inject the solution under the patient's skin.
- The third ball with alcohol is easily pressed to the injection site of the needle, we remove the syringe.
- We press the ball to the injection site, ask the patient to hold it for 5 minutes. Then we put the used ball into a special tray with already used materials.
- We are interested in the patient's well-being, we monitor his reaction during the entire time of manipulation.
- We disinfect cotton balls (or wipes) and a syringe with a needle.
- Remove gloves, put them in a container with disinfectant.
- We wash our hands with antibacterial soap.
