Heating pad technique
The use of a heating pad is based on its therapeutic effect, which consists in reflex relaxation of smooth muscles and increased blood supply to organs and tissues.
The ultimate goal of this procedure is to achieve analgesic and relaxing effects.
The technique of applying the heating pad must be carried out clearly and consistently in order to avoid complications. The procedure is performed strictly according to the doctor's prescription.
Contraindications to the use of heating pads:
- pain in the abdominal cavity of unknown etiology;
- acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity (appendicitis, peritonitis and others);
- bleeding - external and internal;
- the first day after the injury;
- malignant neoplasms;
- unconscious states;
- hyperthermia;
- infected wounds and inflammatory processes of the skin.
To set up a heating pad, you will need a heating pad itself, a water thermometer, a towel or a cover for a heating pad, water at a temperature of 60-65 degrees. To disinfect the heating pad after the procedure, prepare a container with a disinfectant solution .
Heating pad technique. Sequencing
- I wash my hands.
- We take a heating pad by the narrow part of the neck.
- We fill the heating pad with prepared water of the required temperature for 2-3 volumes.
- We put the heating pad on a horizontal surface and, bending the heating pad in its narrow part, displace the air until water appears.
- Screw the lid on tightly.
- We turn the heating pad upside down and check the tightness of the closure of the lid.
- We wrap the heating pad with a towel or place it in a special case.
- We apply a heating pad with a lid outward from the patient to the prepared area of skin.
- After 5 minutes, we check the patient's sensations and the condition of the skin for overheating.
- After the necessary time (as prescribed by the doctor), remove the heating pad.
- We pour out the water from the heating pad, screw on the lid and immerse the heating pad in a container with a disinfectant solution.
- I wash my hands.
The correct technique for using a heating pad should exclude such a possible complication as a burn of the patient's skin. It is important during the procedure to inquire about the sensations and well-being of the patient. If discomfort occurs and the patient's well-being worsens, the nurse should stop the procedure and inform the doctor about the patient's complaints. In the future, be guided by the incoming orders of the doctor.
